12 Revolutionary Strategies to Nurture Your Child's Developing Mind, Survive Everyday Parenting Struggles, and Help Your Family Thrive...

Your toddler throws a tantrum in the middle of a store. Your preschooler refuses to get dressed. Your fifth-grader sulks on the bench instead of playing on the field. Do children conspire to make their parents’ lives endlessly challenging? No—it’s just their developing brain calling the shots!

In this pioneering, practical audiobook, Daniel J. Siegel, neuropsychiatrist and author of the bestsellingMindsight, and parenting expert Tina Payne Bryson demystify the meltdowns and aggravation, explaining the new science of how a child’s brain is wired and how it matures. The “upstairs brain,” which makes decisions and balances emotions, is under construction until the mid-twenties. And especially in young children, the right brain and its emotions tend to rule over the logic of the left brain. No wonder kids can seem—and feel—so out of control. By applying these discoveries to everyday parenting, you can turn any outburst, argument, or fear into a chance to integrate your child’s brain and foster vital growth. Raise calmer, happier children using twelve key strategies, including:

• Name It to Tame It: Corral raging right-brain behavior through left-brain storytelling, appealing to the left brain’s affinity for words and reasoning to calm emotional storms and bodily tension.• Engage, Don’t Enrage: Keep your child thinking and listening, instead of purely reacting.• Move It or Lose It: Use physical activities to shift your child’s emotional state.• Let the Clouds of Emotion Roll By: Guide your children when they are stuck on a negative emotion, and help them understand that feelings come and go.• SIFT: Help children pay attention to the Sensations, Images, Feelings, and Thoughts within them so that they can make better decisions and be more flexible.• Connect Through Conflict: Use discord to encourage empathy and greater social success.

Complete with clear explanations, age-appropriate strategies for dealing with day-to-day struggles, and illustrations that will help you explain these concepts to your child, The Whole-Brain Child shows you how to cultivate healthy emotional and intellectual development so that your children can lead balanced, meaningful, and connected lives.

Out Of Harm's Way: A Parent's Guide to Protecting Young Children from Sexual Abuse Paperback – January 1, 2010

How sexual molesters target kids, how they describe sexual contact as affection, and what parents can do to protect their children is what Sandy Wurtele talks about in a new book from Parenting Press.Out of Harm's Way, a concise overview by a psychologist who studies child sexual abuse, skips the scare tactics and provides realistic recommendations for parents and caregivers. Wurtele, who heads the undergraduate psychology program at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs, explains that creepy-looking strangers aren t the most likely molesters. Using information from predators that she interviewed, Wurtele spells out what behavior to watch for among friends, relatives, coaches, teachers and others who your children know. This 32-page paperback is the latest of Parenting Press s guides to children s personal safety. All new material drawn from Wurtele s decades of work on child sexual abuse, Out of Harm s Way replaces Protect Your Child from Sexual Abuse: A Parent s Guide, written by the late Janie Hart-Rossi. How safe is your young child from sexual abuse?Parents, are you prepared to protect your young child from sexual abusers? If you're like most parents, you could use more information. It's tough to know where to begin or how to think about the problem in a calm manner. Out of Harm's Way can fix that. This book provides you with an inside look at childhood sexual abusers.Find our who abusers typically are,Explore how they think,Discover how they groom children,Learn what will make your child off limits to an abuser. It may surprise you to learn that children who have been taught about healthy sexuality and body safety are empowered to resist sexual exploitation. Follow the simple steps and scripts in Out of Harm's Way to give your young child sexual information, skills, and simple rules to support protective boundaries. While your child may assist in keeping herself or himself safe, it is your responsibility as loving parent to cover all the bases in reducing th4 chances of harm to your child. These measures can further protect your child:Be assertive about screening companions and people in authority,Trust your instincts when a situation doesn't seem quite right,Listen to and trust your child when she/he shares information with you,Teach your child to say to potential abusers, I'll tell my mom-dad if you...You will be empowered to protect your child and reduce the chances of sexual exploitation when you act upon the practical guidelines in Out of Harm's Way. That is a reassuring thought for any parent!

My Body Belongs to Me Hardcover – September 1, 2009

by Jill Starishevsky  (Author), Sara Muller (Illustrator)

Speaking to children on their own terms, this critically acclaimed book sensitively establishes boundaries for youngsters. In a non-threatening, engaging manner, this guide teaches kids that when it comes to their body, there are some parts that are for “no one else to see” and empowers them to tell a parent or teacher if someone touches them inappropriately. Telling the story of a gender-neutral child who is inappropriately touched by an uncle’s friend, this tale delivers a powerful moral when the youngster reveals the offender and the parents praise the child’s bravery. Most importantly, this narrative assures young ones that sexual molestation is not their fault, and by speaking out, the child will continue to grow big and strong. A “Suggestions for the Storyteller” section is also included to assist in facilitating a comfortable discussion afterwards, thereby helping to prevent the unthinkable from happening to any child. With inspirational rhyming and beautiful illustrations, this is a compelling and uplifting message of what is right and wrong.

I Said No! A Kid-to-kid Guide to Keeping Private Parts Private Perfect Paperback – September 20, 2008

by Kimberly King  (Author), Zack King (Author), Sue Rama (Illustrator)

Helping kids set healthy boundaries for their private parts can be a daunting and awkward task for parents, counselors and educators. Written from a kid s point of view, I Said No! makes this task a lot easier. To help Zack cope with a real-life experience he had with a friend, he and his mom wrote a book to help prepare other kids to deal with a range of problematic situations. I Said No! uses kid-friendly language and illustrations to help parents and concerned adults give kids guidance they can understand, practice and use.Using a simple, direct, decidedly non-icky approach that doesn't dumb down the issues involved, as well as an easy-to-use system to help kids rehearse and remember appropriate responses to help keep them safe, I Said No! covers a variety of topics, including:What s appropriate and with whom.

How to deal with inappropriate behavior, bribes and threats.

When and where to go for help, and what to do if the people you re turning to for help don t listen.

Dealing with feelings of guilt and shame.

A Parent's Guide to the New Teenager....

A brand new edition of the bestselling guide to raising teenagersWhen Anthony E. Wolf's witty and compassionate guide to raising adolescents was first published, its amusing title and fresh approach won it widespread admiration. Beleaguered parents breathed sighs of relief and gratitude. Now Dr. Wolf has revised and updated his bestseller to tackle the changes of the past decade. He points out that while the basic issues of adolescence and the relationships between parents and their children remain much the same, today's teenagers navigate a faster, less clearly anchored world. Wolf's revisions include a new chapter on the Internet, a significantly modified section on drugs and drinking, and an added piece on gay teenagers. Although the rocky and ever-changing terrain of contemporary adolescence may bewilder parents, Get Out of My Life gives them a great road map.
